NY Dentists Volunteer to Promote Children’s Oral Health at Harlem Week 2011

Nearly two dozen volunteers representing organized dentistry in New York participated in Harlem Week 2011. The event was sponsored by the New York State Dental Foundation, New York County Dental Society, Second District Dental Society, Suffolk County Dental Society and Bronx County Dental Society.

In addition to the New York dentists, there were also dental students from Columbia University, as well as residents from Mt. Sinai Hospital on hand. Together this group of volunteers was instrumental in making the oral health screening at Harlem Week a huge success. Over the course of the two day event, nearly 500 children and their family members received oral health screenings.

As families entered the schoolyard of PS 175, where the event was held, they were greeted by dentists in white coats eager to volunteer their services. They received tubes of toothpaste, toothbrushes, coloring books, floss of all colors and shapes, then were invited under the Foundation’s tent for free dental screenings. Patients who needed follow-up treatment were given the contact information of their local dental societies, which would refer them to dentists in their neighborhoods.

Congressman Charles Rangel’s office partnered to support the events, and additional support came from the Henry Schein Corporation. Saturday and Sunday were designated as NYC Children’s Festival. Saturday kicked off with a parade down Malcolm X Blvd. and 135th Street to the schoolyard at PS 175 for a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Special thanks go out to Dr. Madeline Ginzburg, who coordinated the event, and to Dr. Deborah Weisfuse for her strong support and efforts to recruit volunteers.
