NY Dentists at Harlem Week

For the second year, thanks to the New York Dental Foundation and volunteer dentists, hundreds of children and their families will also benefit by free oral health and cancer screenings. As Dr. Kirk Gleason, Chairperson, of the New York State Dental Foundation explains: “Oral health care is crucial to general health. There are many diseases that first manifest in the oral cavity and often the dentist is the first health care provider to observe certain changes which may have otherwise gone undetected. “ On Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19st, Dr. Gleason encourages adults and children of all ages to take advantage of the free screenings. Children under 18 years of age should be accompanied by a parent or guardian. According to Dr. Gleason, “Volunteer dentists giving the screenings will also refer patients who require further care to a dentist in their area. Last year our dentists screened over 500 kids and family members. This year, we are eager to exceed last year’s total." Dr. Madeline Ginzburg, a member of the NYSD Foundation Board and Congressman Charles Rangel spearheaded the participation of NYSDA members. Patients with a need for follow-up treatment were referred to local dental components for contacts with local dentists. Dr. Ginzburg explained the screenings also serve as a means of patient education and to locate dental homes for patients without a family dentist. The free screenings will take place under the blue canopies in the schoolyard at PS School 175, 135th Street, between Adam Clayton Powel Jr. Blvd. and Malcolm X Blvd. on Saturday, August 18th and again on Sunday August 19th.
