Over the course of 2022-2023 the NYSDA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force will be hosting a series of programs to celebrate and build awareness around diversity within the profession.
On October 26, the DEI Task Force will be hosting a program titled “LGBTQ+ Care for the Dental Team.” It will share ways to increase awareness and understanding of the LGBTQ+ community, help dentists recognize common LGBTQ+ terms and definitions, learn about the medical, emotional, and physical changes that transgender individuals go through so that dentists can better care for these patients and discuss ways to become a better ally dentist.

About the Speaker
Dr. Alex Barrera practices dentistry at Legacy Community Health in Houston, Texas. He is a member of various organizations including the American Dental Association, Hispanic Dental Association, Greater Houston Dental Association, and the Houston Equality Dental Network. He currently serves as the chair of the New Dentist Committee for the Hispanic Dental Association and president of the Houston Equality Dental Network. He participated in the ADA’s Institute for Diversity in Leadership and uses his platforms to educate dental professionals on how to better treat LGBTQ+ patients. Dr. Barrera is a certified yoga teacher and uses mindfulness and meditation to help better treat patients with dental phobias.
