Dr. Cuomo Installed as New York State Dental Association President

Albany, NY – Anthony Cuomo, DMD, took office on June 1, 2023, as the 143rd president of the New York State Dental Association (NYSDA).

Dr. Anthony M. Cuomo is an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and in practice with his son, Christopher, at Northeast Implant & Oral Surgery in Carmel and Danbury, CT. Dr. Cuomo is a graduate of Fordham University and New York University College of Dentistry. He did his postdoctoral training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Lincoln Hospital in South Bronx.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to lead this prestigious organization and I am eager to work together with all of our members to advance the dental profession in New York,” said Dr. Cuomo.

Dr. Cuomo is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and has been involved in leadership roles in dentistry at his community level by serving as Chairman of the Dental Department at Danbury Hospital as well as section chief of Danbury Hospital’s Oral and Maxillofacial Section. He also has served on that hospital’s executive board and has been elected President of both the Putnam County Dental Society and Greater Danbury Dental Society and continues to remain active in both. Dr. Cuomo has been actively involved in the 9th District Dental Association. During his term as NYSDA Trustee he served on the Governmental Affairs Committee as a liaison to the NYSDA Board of Trustees as well as serving for 3 years as a member and one year as the chairperson on the Strategic Planning Committee of NYSDA. On the national level, in addition to being an ADA Delegate and Alternate Delegate for over a decade he has had the privilege of being asked to serve as chairman of the ADA’s Committee on Credentials Rules and Order.

In addition to Dr. Cuomo, new and returning NYSDA officers and trustees were installed during proceedings of the House of Delegates.

Dr. Prabha Krishnan, president-elect, is in private practice in Forest Hills, NY. In addition to working full time in her private practice, focusing on periodontics and implant surgery, Dr. Krishnan is an attending and chief of periodontics at Flushing Hospital Medical Center. She also serves as a member of the Indian Dental Association Board of Trustees. Dr. Krishnan received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from New York University College of Dentistry in 1991. She continued her postdoctoral training in periodontics at New York University College of Dentistry, which she completed in 1993.

Dr. Maurice Edwards, vice-president, is in private practice in New York, NY. Dr. Maurice Edwards received his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. Immediately upon completion, Dr. Edwards matched and completed a 4-year Residency Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at New York University/Bellevue Hospital. He is very active in the American Dental Association, American Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), New York State Association of Oral Maxillofacial Surgeons (NYSSOMS) and the New York Society of Forensic Dentistry. The day after Sept. 11, 2001, Maurice spent the next 10 days with thousands of volunteers at Ground Zero searching for remains of the victims and then the following 8 months with the Dental ID Unit, at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York City, helping to identify about 60% of all the remains identified.

Dr. Paul Leary, secretary-treasurer, is in private practice in Hauppauge, NY. Dr. Paul Leary is a graduate of Temple University School of Dentistry. He entered the United States Navy in his Freshman year of dental school, completed three years of active duty service upon graduation and remained in the U S Naval Reserve for 14 years. He left active service and entered private practice where he remains today, 34 years later. He shares ownership of his practice with Dr. Matthew Hanna. Paul has held many leadership positions in his home component of Suffolk County, NYSDA, and the ADA too numerous to mention. Most notably, he was the Immediate-Past Trustee representing the Second ADA District, NYSDA Trustee representing Suffolk County, and a prior member of the Board of Governors. He was Chair of the ADA Compensation Committee and Chair of The Commission for Continuing Education Provider Recognition (CCEPR), the ADA certification Council for Education Program Review and CE Accreditation. Paul is a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, The American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists, and a prior member of the Military Board of Surgeons.


Dr. William Karp, Speaker of the House, is in private practice in Syracuse, NY. Dr. Karp went to Dental School at NYU College of Dentistry and completed is general practice residency at the University of Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital. Dr.Karp is a general practice dentist and has maintained his private practice in the Syracuse area since 1983. He is also an Attending at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center where he helps to educate the dental residents. Bill has been involved at all levels of organized dentistry. Among some of the leadership positions he has held, he was a delegate at the ADA as well as being a member of the Council on Communications. At NYSDA he was a Governor when NYSDA was a Board of Governors, a Trustee, and a delegate in the House of Delegates. At the local level he was President of the Fifth District Dental Society and has been their Parliamentarian since 2009. Dr. Karp maintains membership in all the honorary Colleges.

Bill’s second legal address is the JMA Wireless Dome at Syracuse University where he has season tickets to both Football and Basketball. Dr. Karp is a diehard Orange fan. If not at the Dome Dr. Karp can probably be found on a golf course.
