Understanding the New Collaborative Practice Law
Recent legislation allows dental hygienists to provide preventive services in certain community settings without the dentist physically present, provided they work under a collaborative agreement with a licensed dentist.
This approach helps expand access to basic preventive care in locations such as:
- Hospitals
- Schools
- Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs)
- Long-term care facilities
- Group homes
The law does not allow hygienists to open independent practices or operate entirely on their own. Dentists remain central to diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient care.
