Course Description:

Oral Ulcerative Disease

This course will provide an overview of various pathologic conditions associated with oral ulcerations. Case-based examples will be used to help participants recognize features of the patient history as well as clinical signs and symptoms to make an accurate diagnosis. Current concepts in disease pathogenesis and treatment options will be reinforced through an interactive format.

  • Understand the features of traumatic ulcers and clinical settings that contribute to their development
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of herpesvirus infections, from HSV to VZV, and potential treatment options
  • Review immunologic ulcerative conditions from canker sores to erosive lichen planus to mucous membrane pemphigoid and understand treatment strategies

Looking for Leukoplakia

This course will examine and discuss the conventional examination of the dental patient, with an emphasis on the clinical features of precancerous and cancerous lesions.  Case-based examples will be used to emphasize high-risk settings and physical characteristics that can help distinguish worrisome lesions from other conditions.  We will review current data regarding the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in oral cancer as well as tonsillar cancer.  The role of adjuncts in the detection of early oral cancer and precancerous lesions will also be discussed.

  • To review a standard approach to clinical evaluation of the dental patient, including both visual and tactile evaluation of the face, neck and oral cavity
  • To review current concepts of oral cancer and precancerous lesions, including epidemiologic evidence for risk factors in oral cancer as well as tonsillar cancer
  • To understand the scientific evidence behind commercially-available devices as adjuncts in the detection of oral cancer
